Senator Feinstein on Cluster Bombs.

Questioned by Sam Husseini of the Washington Stakeout, Senator Dianne Feinstein says she would like to push legislation against cluster bombs forward.

Sign the petition asking the Senate - and particularly the Democratic presidential candidates - to take a big step toward banning these weapons that kill almost exclusively civilians.

Senator Feinstein did specifically note Israel's use of cluster bombs in Lebanon when introducing the bill. It's clear that this was the motivation for this legislation, including a similar amendment that failed last year. It's not exactly a condemnation, but, as Jewish Voice for Peace put it, "This is a break for Feinstein with her usual myopic support of Israel."

Here's the relevant part of her remarks on introducing this bill:

"What gives rise, in part, to my bill are recent developments in Lebanon over alleged use of cluster bombs by Israel.

"It is estimated that Israel dropped 4 million bomblets in southern Lebanon and 1 million of these bomblets failed to explode.

"As Lebanese children and families have returned to their homes and begin to rebuild, they have been exposed to the danger of these unexploded bomblets lying in the rubble.

"22 people, including six children have been killed and 133, including 47 children, injured.

"One United Nations official estimates that 40 percent of the cluster bombs launched by Israel in Southern Lebanon failed to explode."

If Feinstein had condemned Istarels' use of cluster bombs in Lebanon during the assault and after, I would feel that she is more sincere. hey, but maybe she did publicly condemn Israel -- I'm sure someone will straighten me out here!
