In addition, I want to emphasize a few things about Guinea so you will know why the US (and France,
Canada, China, etc.) are paying very close attention to the situation there. It largely centers on resources. Guinea is the world’s largest producer of bauxite, the raw material from which aluminum is made. In addition, there is strong evidence that Guinea may have off-shore oil. Guinea has had only two presidents since its independence in 1958. For well over a year, the International Foundation for Election Systems or, IFES, as it is more commonly known, has been courting Guineans living in the US to select the next crop of Guinean politicians. Finally, over the last year, the US has dramatically increased the number of military assigned to the US embassy in Guinea’s capital, Conakry. US foreign policy towards Guinea should be very interesting over the next few years.
